I’m at a friend’s stage rehearsal; he’s practising a call and response tune. Suddenly this other man breaks out from the shadows and starts singing the responses. I know who he is. Everyone knows who he is. Or so I thought. Suddenly people start walking towards him, trying to get him off set.
I find that I’m instinctively throwing myself in front of him, with my hands spread out towards the predators. Like some tiny dwarf-like bodyguard.
‘Don’t you see its Damon Albarn’ I cry.
Everyone’s jaws drop. Silence. He’s scheduled to play as the main act of the night, they all know it.
As if it couldn’t get any weirder, Damon decides to use me as his human shield for the rest of the day. Or maybe I’m just tall enough for him to rest his hands on me.
